Smoking a Gilded Cigar

Smoking a gilded cigar is a very rare treat and to truly enjoy this decadent gem we recommend a few things before you light up:

✦ Lighting & Smoking Guidance

Cigar lovers know: gold is not just beautiful - it is also thermally responsive.
Here’s how to respect both the leaf and the gold.

  1. Cut: Use a sharp straight guillotine for a clean cut on the head of the cigar. For some specialty rolled cigars, the foot of the cigar may need a light trim to remove the gold. Do not VCut or punch cut you will need to maximize the draw of air with a clean cut.

  2. Toast: Hold the foot at a 45° angle. Slowly toast using a butane torch or soft flame, rotating with patience.

  3. Engage: Once evenly toasted, begin to draw gently.
    Gold responds to heat with elegance - it will shimmer and darken slightly, but will not burn with flame.

  4. Draw Rhythm: Puff with care. Let it rest between draws. This isn't a race… it's a ritual.

  5. Ash Retention: Gold-gilded cigars often hold a longer ash. When the ash gets to about an inch long it may not fall naturally, you will have to roll it gently into an ashtray.

Additional Info:

✦ Gold burns at a much higher temperature than tobacco so it is important to have a butane torch lighter handy as it will require re-lighting. This is perfectly normal, and is part of the golden cigar experience.

✦ As the cigar burns, the tobacco will “tunnel” inside the gold and require the cigar to be “ashed” once the tobacco is too deep inside the tunnel. A good indicator of this is when the cigar has about a 1 inch ash and is beginning to need re-lit.

✦ If you are a true cigar aficionado, you will notice that the gold mellows the flavors of the cigar and creates a smooth taste and finish to your cigar. Once you burn past the gilded section of the cigar, the bolder flavors of the cigar will begin to emerge

✦ Is the gold safe to handle?


Yes. The gold applied is 99.999% pure elemental gold (Au79) - the highest natural purity available. It is non-toxic, flavorless, and biologically inert, meaning it will not interact with the body. Gold is often used in fine confections, luxury spirits, and even modern medicine for its non-reactive properties.

The melting point of gold is much higher than the cigar and can be influenced by several factors, including its purity and the presence of alloying elements. Pure gold, known as 24-karat gold, melts at the standard temperature of 1,064°C. However, when gold is alloyed with other metals like silver, copper, or platinum to create various karat ratings (such as 18K, 14K, or 10K gold), the melting point can change. These alloying elements often lower the melting point, making the metal more workable but also affecting its color and hardness.

✦ Is It Safe to Smoke a Gilded Cigar?

Yes when crafted with pure 24k gold, EmberGild™ cigars are safe to smoke and entirely unique in experience.

Each EmberGild™ piece is adorned with 99.999% pure 24k American gold, hand-refined without chemicals and applied using traditional gilding methods. This ultra-pure gold is not alloyed or mixed with other metals, which is a crucial distinction: pure gold is biologically inert, meaning it does not react with the body or the cigar. It is the same grade used in fine confections, medical implants, and luxury culinary applications.

When the cigar is lit, the gold does not burn, melt, or vaporize. Instead, it softens slightly, folding into the ash as the cigar burns creating a signature golden tunneling effect that gently warms the leaf. This can help round out bitterness, soften tannins, and bring forward a smoother, more elegant draw.

The adhesive used to bond the gold layers to the cigar is an organic vegan food grade proprietary blend safe for humans.

🔥 Temperatures at a Glance:

  • Pure 24k gold melts at 1,948°F (1,064°C)

  • Torch cigar lighters can reach 2,300 - 2,600°F, but only at the tip of the flame

  • Cigars combust at 600–900°F (315 - 480°C) far below the melting point of gold

So while a torch lighter may be hot enough to melt gold in isolation, the cigar leaf itself never reaches such high temperatures and ignites before the flame would have a chance to fully isolate and melt the gold. The gold remains intact and simply becomes part of the ash, never releasing harmful fumes or altering the burn in a dangerous way.

✦ Can I smoke the cigar? Or is it just for display?


You may do either.
This is a fully functional, premium cigar beneath the gilding, and can be enjoyed as such. However, many recipients choose to preserve it as a keepsake or ceremonial heirloom - a symbol of honor, leadership, or legacy.

✦ How should I store it?
If you intend to smoke the cigar, please store it in a climate-stable humidor, away from direct light and extreme humidity. Use humidity packets of 68% - 72%.

✦ If preserving as a keepsake, we recommend keeping it in its original box or an archival display case. The gold will not tarnish, fade, or lose brilliance - it is pure and enduring.

✦ Is this a limited edition?
Yes. Only a select number of EmberGild™ cigars are created each year by our Master Artisan herself. Each is recorded and documented for provenance and authenticity. Due to the bespoke and organic nature no two are ever alike.

Yes. The gold used is real, pure, and elementally certified at 99.999% (five nines) Domestically Sourced American Gold, the precious metal noble Element AU79. This gold holds both elemental purity and energetic reverence.

✦ Humidity and Storage (Preservation for the Collector)

Each EmberGild™ cigar ships with a 68% humidity pack - ideal for maintaining structure and balance during short-term transport.

For continued aging or presentation:

  • Store at 68–70% relative humidity in a Spanish cedar-lined humidor

  • Use white cotton gloves to handle and prevent oils or fingerprint damage

  • Do not freeze - this disrupts the integrity of the leaf

  • For preservation as an heirloom, keep in a display-grade case, out of direct sunlight. For longevity, it is best to display in a sealed case, and/or use humidy packs to prevent the cigar leaf from drying and cracking.

Note: The gold will not tarnish. It is pure and stable 24k Gold, requiring no special treatment beyond reverence. It only needs to be encased in resin if it is to be as an art piece to never be smoked and enjoyed for generations as an heirloom or if it is to be handled often.

Handling Note:
Wait until the cigar and gold have cooled completely. Use a soft brush or spoon to gather only the gold flakes not dark ash. Rinse with distilled water if needed. Store in a glass jar or vial with a secure lid. Label with your name or the date if desired.
